10 Steps to Safe Computing
  1. Install ANTI-VIRUS: Fend off Computer viruses by using Anti-Virus software regularly and be cautious when opening attachments and sharing files. A free copy of McAfee Anti-Virus can be obtain online by going to the University Village Software Utilities Page.
  2. UPDATE WINDOWS: Download necessary operating system updates by going to the Microsoft website @ http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
  3. SPAM Filtering: Protect yourself from phishing by installing and configuring your spam filter. For further assistance check out the Cal Poly Pomona Spam Assistance Website @ http://www.csupomona.edu/~ehelp/spam/.
  4. FIREWALL: Enable your Windows XP firewall or install a third party firewall to prevent hackers from intruding onto your computer. Third party firewalls include, Sygate Personal Firewall 5.6 and Zone Alarm both can be downloaded free of charge from www.download.com. Obtain free firewall software by going to the University Village Software Utilities Page, and following the link provided.
  5. FILE SHARING: Limit use of file sharing which often times can increase chances of spreading viruses, worms and other malicious programs. In addition, please remember that it is illegal to trade or share copyright materials. Any students caught downloading illegally will have their network port shutoff.
  6. REMOVE SPYWARE: Spyware and Adware are real threats to the integrity of your computer system, email, and other data. Please remember to be cautious when installing unknown programs. MacAfee Spyware Software is available free of charge to all Village residence, you can obtain the software at the University Village Software Utilities Page.   7. BACKUP DATA: Back-up your computer data on disks or CDs regularly.
